FAQs

Why does Paper II have much heavier negative marking (-1) than Paper I (-0.25)?

Paper II is the specialized, higher-stakes engineering paper that primarily decides final merit, so SSC penalizes wrong answers more heavily there to discourage guessing on technical questions.

Do all engineering streams (Civil, Electrical, Mechanical) take the same Paper I?

The General Intelligence and General Awareness portions of Paper I are common to all streams, but the General Engineering portion within Paper I (and all of Paper II) is specific to the stream you apply under.

How many vacancies does the 2026 SSC JE cycle have, and when does the application window close?

Per recent coverage, the 2026 notification lists 1,748 tentative Junior Engineer vacancies, with the application window opening around 2 September 2026 and closing around 22-23 September 2026 — confirm exact dates on ssc.gov.in since these can shift.

Is there a document verification stage after the written exams?

Yes — after Paper I and Paper II, shortlisted candidates typically go through document verification (and in some streams, certificate/qualification checks) before final selection; this is a standard SSC JE stage though not a "marks" component.
