Not confirmed The exam pattern below has not been confirmed from the official notice currently available to GovBabu — it may change.

Prelims: 2 hours (one paper). Mains: each of the 5 papers is a separate 3-hour paper (held on different days). Interview: not fixed duration. · Negative Marking: Prelims: -1/3 (0.33) mark deducted per wrong answer (this 1/3 penalty applies from the 71st CCE onward per multiple sources; earlier cycles used a different scheme — verify against the specific CCE notification year you are covering). Mains (descriptive papers): no negative marking (not an MCQ format apart from the optional paper, which is MCQ-based but sources did not confirm a specific negative-marking value for it — treat as unconfirmed). · Passing Marks: Prelims: N/A — merit-based cutoff, declared after each exam, no fixed pre-set qualifying %. (Mains Hindi paper has a fixed 30% qualifying mark, and the Mains Optional paper has fixed category-wise qualifying percentages — General 40%, BC 36.5%, EBC 34%, SC/ST/Women/PwD 32% — but these are qualifying-only papers, not the main Prelims/Mains merit cutoff.)

FAQs

Is BPSC Prelims marks counted in the final merit list?

No. BPSC Prelims is purely a screening/qualifying stage — only Mains and Interview marks count toward the final merit and rank.

Do I need to clear the optional subject paper in Mains to get selected?

Yes, but only as a qualifying hurdle — you must score the minimum category-wise percentage in the optional paper, but the marks themselves are not added to your merit score. Only GS-I, GS-II, and Essay marks (plus Interview) decide your final rank.

Is there negative marking in the BPSC Mains exam?

The Mains papers (Hindi, GS-I, GS-II, Essay) are descriptive/subjective, so there's no negative marking there. Only the objective Prelims paper has negative marking.

Does BPSC have a fixed passing percentage for Prelims like some other state PSCs?

No. BPSC Prelims cutoffs are announced fresh after each exam based on difficulty and number of vacancies — there's no pre-declared fixed qualifying percentage (unlike the Mains Hindi and Optional papers, which do have fixed qualifying minimums).
