Exam Pattern
Some details below are not confirmed — check the official notification ↗
Preliminary: 2.5 hours (150 minutes) single sitting. Mains: 3 hours per paper (8 papers across multiple days). Interview: not fixed duration. · Negative Marking: Preliminary: approximately 1/3 mark deducted per wrong MCQ answer (exact fraction not confirmed to more precision than "~1/3" across sources). Mains: sources disagree — one secondary source claims negative marking applies to Mains as well, but Mains is a descriptive/written exam, which is inconsistent with typical negative-marking mechanics; treat "no negative marking in Mains" as the more plausible reading and this point as unconfirmed pending the official notification. · Passing Marks: Preliminary: N/A — merit-based cutoff, declared after each exam, no fixed pre-set qualifying % for the paper as a whole. However, within Preliminary there is reportedly a fixed 33% minimum qualifying requirement on a specific qualifying section/paper component per some sources — this was not independently corroborated with full confidence and should be verified against the official notification.

FAQs
Do West Bengal domicile SC/ST candidates really pay zero application fee?
Yes, per current secondary sources — SC/ST and PwD candidates who are West Bengal domiciles are fully exempted from the WBCS application fee, but the same categories from outside West Bengal must pay the full General-category fee.
How many compulsory versus optional papers are there in WBCS Mains?
Six compulsory papers (a regional language, English, two General Studies papers, Indian Constitution & Economy, and Arithmetic/Reasoning) for everyone, plus two additional optional-subject papers only for candidates applying to Group A and Group B posts — Group C and D aspirants skip the optional papers.
Does the Preliminary exam score count toward my final WBCS rank?
No, the Preliminary exam is a screening/qualifying stage only — your final merit and rank are decided by Mains plus Interview marks.
Why do the Interview marks differ depending on which WBCS group I'm applying for?
WBCS recruits for four service groups (A, B, C, D) with different seniority/responsibility levels, and the interview weightage scales with that — Group A and B carry 200 interview marks each, while Group C carries 150 and Group D carries 100.
